Blepharoplasty - eyelid surgery

Aesthetic eyelid surgery has become a very popular procedure, and the reason is easy to understand. The saying that your eyes are the windows to your soul is very true, and tired, baggy eyes are one of the most aging factors in your face.

General information on eyelid surgery

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is performed for cosmetic purposes, but inherited traits can also be corrected using this cosmetic procedure.

Puffy, tired and baggy eyelids can have a second chance at youth with eyelid surgery, since the procedure can remove excess skin and excess fat that causes baggy lids and puffiness.

The surgical incisions are well hidden in your eye's top fold, or below your bottom eyelash line and fades very well and are nearly imperceptible within a couple of weeks. Some surgical procedures need no outside incisions and are done on the inside of the eyelid.

    • Eyelid surgery is however not magic and will not correct crow's feet, a hood that droops from the corner of your outer eyelids, droopy eyebrows or scowl lines.
    • Although often performed and very popular, eyelid surgery, like any surgery has risks, and that must be discussed with your plastic surgeon.
    • When too much tissue or fat is removed from your eyelids, you may be left with sunken and hollow eyes, but this is prevented by conservative surgery.
    • The incidence of blindness after surgery is very low, but you may experience blurred vision due to swelling and damage to the muscles surrounding the eyes, which will normally correct itself within days.
    • Corneal abrasions can happen during any surgical procedure should your eyes be open and accidentally scratched or abraded. This is rectified by taping the eyes closed for 3 days to heal themselves.
    • Patients may experience "dry eye syndrome" after eyelid surgery, but this can in most cases be prevented by a special suture (canthopexy) to support the lower eyelid during the healing process.
  • Recovery after eyelid surgery eyelid surgery
    • Bruising and swelling will normally disappear within fourteen days - depending on what type of surgery was performed.
    • Your cosmetic surgeon may suggest the application of cold packs to your eyes after surgery to help reduce swelling and bruising. Stitches are normally removed within 7 days after the operation.
    • Although you may be able to work within 6 days after surgery, it may depend on if you are looking good enough to go out in public.
    • Wearing of good quality sunglasses is a definite must after the surgery, since your eyes will be sensitive and should be protected from wind as well as sunlight.
    • Exercising and strenuous work must be curtailed for at least two weeks after surgery and contact lenses can normally be worn two weeks after surgery - but please discuss this with your surgeon beforehand.
