Facial implants are not only used for cosmetic or rejuvenating purposes, but are also used in reconstructive surgery, and are a relatively easy and cost effective way to strengthen a weak chin or to give fullness to flat cheeks or to emphasize the jaw line. It is also an easy way to achieve facial symmetry.

Facial implants come in a variety of shapes, sizes and material and can be placed in the chin, jaws, nose, cheeks etc.
The plastic surgeon will normally make a small incision in a natural crease, or inside the mouth, which is then not noticeable, near the site where the implant has to be placed, and do the placement through this incision.
- Notes on facial implants

- This type of work is normally done under general anesthetic, although some plastic surgeons may attend to minor procedures using local anesthetic.
- The procedure normally takes about 1 - 2 hours - depending on the type of implant used and the complexity of the work, and stitches are removed within 7 - 10 days.
- Recovery time is about a week, but care should be taken around the implant site for about 6 weeks. Swelling and bruising can occur and to be on the safe side, bargain on two weeks before appearing in public.
- Should your plastic surgeon wish to operate through your mouth, and you have dental or gum problems, it might be wise to consult either your dentist or periodontist before the time.
- Types of facial implants

- Various types of implants are used ranging from solid flexible plastic, solid silicone, as well as material resembling sea coral, Gore-Tex which is a man-made fiber much like rubber, or even human cadaver bone can be used.
- The one implant that we have had personal experience with, is that of a polyethylene implant, which is inert and porous, made by Porex, which gives the plastic surgeon great flexibility since it can be carved and molded in theatre for final adjustments.
- This type of implant is readily accepted by the body and is a very stable type of implant and is not associated with bone erosion. Your desired size implant is delivered to your plastic surgeon in sterile and ready-to-use packaging.
