Forehead lift to lift your brow

Raising your eyebrows to a higher position is a very rejuvenating procedure and is obtained by doing a brow lift - also called a forehead lift. This procedure is normally done together with other procedures (for instance a facelift) to obtain a more harmonious rejuvenated look.

General information on having a brow lift forehead brow lift

A brow lift will also help to soften and improve horizontal forehead wrinkles and scowl lines between the eyes, but it will not help with baggy eyelids nor puffy eyes or crow's feet.

Sagging or a low brow will create a tired and aged appearance and deep horizontal wrinkles and lines and scowl lines.

A brow lift can basically be performed in three different ways - but the precise procedure used will depend on your surgeon.

  • Corneal forehead lift forehead brow lift
    • A corneal forehead lift would entail that an incision is made across the top of your head - from ear to ear. By opening this incision your plastic surgeon will be able to work on the muscles that cause the wrinkling and lines.
    • In closing the incision your plastic surgeon will remove about 1 to 2 cm of skin and then suture the skin together. This incision line will be hidden in your hair and your hairline will also be lifted by a centimeter or so. The scalp may be numb for months after surgery.
    • This technique is not advisable for men losing hair, or that already have a receding hairline.
  • Endoscopic forehead lift forehead brow lift
    • The second method for doing a brow lift is to use the endoscopic method where about six short incisions are made and an endoscope is then inserted by which your plastic surgeon will be able to do some limited work.
    • The scowl lines will be able to be manipulated, but the muscles causing horizontal wrinkles will not be accessible using this technique. Excess skin will also not be removed although the brow will be lifted and your scalp will be anchored to your skull using absorbable screws.
    • This technique is not recommended if you have very droopy brows or very deep creases.
  • Subcutaneous forehead lift forehead brow lift
    • This type of forehead lift is basically the same as the corneal lift, but instead of the incision being made across the top of the head, the incision is placed at your hairline.
    • This means that although excess skin is removed, your hairline doesn't move, but you will have a surgical scar on the hairline.
    • This technique has the benefit that your scalp may not be numb as is the case with a corneal lift but you would always have to wear your hair forward to conceal the incision scar.
  • Recovery from a brow lift forehead brow lift
    • Swelling and bruising improves within 2 - 3 weeks and bandages are normally removed within 3 days and stitches within 10 days. Although you should be able to return to work within 5 days, you may decide to stay out of the public eye for 2 weeks.
  • Notes on having a forehead / brow lift forehead brow lift
    • Since there are risks with any surgical procedure you should know that risks are involved and you also need to discuss forehead and scalp numbness with your surgeon as well as brow symmetry and the possibility of a relapse of your forehead.
    • When a skilled plastic surgeon performs this procedure you will not be left with a permanently surprised look, and the choice of what type of technique to be used must be discussed with the surgeon.
