Permanent make-up - also known as micropigmentation

Permanent make-up, also called micropigmentation, is a technique where metabolically inert pigment is implanted below the epidermis for cosmetic purposes.

General information on permanent make-up permanent make-up

This is really a tattooing process and needles penetrate the skin a few millimeters whereupon the pigment is applied.

Redness, swelling and some bruising may occur but the majority of people can face the public within 48 hours after the procedure. Since a crust also forms, it may be advisable to have such a procedure scheduled for a Friday.

Local anesthetic is either injected into the site beforehand or a topical anesthetic may also provide relief of the pain and discomfort during the procedure.

The areas normally treated with this procedure are to provide permanent top and bottom eyeliner, enhancement of eyebrows, definition and coloring of the lips, improving vitiligo (uneven skin pigmentation) as well as reconstructing the areola around the nipple after breast surgery.

  • Custom colors in permanent make-up permanent make-up
    • The color pigments can be custom mixed to suit your needs, but remember, the results are permanent and laser surgery will be required to remove the pigment if not happy with the result. After insertion the pigment may appear brighter or darker than first thought but the color will fade within a few days to the chosen color.
    • Not only is it essential that all needles be sterile and not used previously but since the procedure is permanent be sure that you use a well-skilled and experienced technician or therapist, and preferably under medical supervision since correcting mistakes are fraught with difficulty, cost and pain.
    • After the procedure a topical antiseptic cream is normally applied and a crust or scab will appear within a few days.
    • Micropigmentation, or permanent make-up, should be treated seriously, and the decision to have it done should not be made lightly.
  • Cautionary notes on permanent make-up permanent make-up
    • As with any cosmetic procedure, the client must ensure that the person performing the tattoo permanent make-up understands exactly what they are aiming for.
    • The therapist/operator should also inform the client of what can be achieved and what can't be done - this will eliminate client dissatisfaction.
      • The USA FDA also has some notes concerning permanent make-up and this can be viewed by clicking here.
      • There is also a FDA consumer alert regarding adverse events associated with "Permanent Makeup" which you can view by clicking here.
