Spider vein removal also known as sclerotherapy

The tiny visible vessels within the skin are normally referred to as spider veins (also known as telangiectasias ) and should not be confused with varicose veins. Spider veins appear mostly on the face and legs and can be removed in two ways.

Sclerotherapy - spider vein injections removal spider veins

  • The first option that you have is to have them injected with a sclerosing solution causing them to contract and collapse. The spider vein will first turn white (blanche) and then disappear. Since a micro-needle is used this form of treatment is best suited for larger and medium sized spider veins.
  • It is a relatively painless procedure and no "down-time" is required, although you may have to wear a bandage or compression hose for 5 - 10 days - depending on the extent of work done.
  • Normal living can be resumed immediately, but exercising must be curtailed for at least a week as well as taking very hot baths and showers and consuming alcohol.
  • A 50% improvement is normally experienced after the first session and may be followed up with subsequent sessions at 6 week intervals, although some spider veins will refuse to respond to sclerotherapy.

Notes on spider vein removal removal spider veins

  • Follow up treatments should be schedules about 3 months apart.
  • Laser treatment is the treatment of choice for facial spider veins and the bruising normally disappears within a week.
  • Even if you have a 100% removal rate of spider veins, new spider veins may appear in time, since these therapies are for the removal of already formed spider veins, but does not prevent them.
