Erythema is an abnormal redness of the skin caused by congestion of the capillaries and is one of the major signs that inflammation is present at a particular location of the skin.

This causes the capillaries to dilate (enlarge) which then results in the redness of the skin.

Erythema can be caused by various factors such as:

infection
sunburn
electrical treatments or burns
contact allergies
burns
systemic allergies
toxicity
exercise
insect stings
allergies
bacterial infection
viral infection
fungal infection
protozoa infection
massage
windburn etc.

Although erythema need not be a serious medical condition, it may be an underlying symptom of a medical condition. Should you be concerned regarding any unusual symptoms, please contact your medical practitioner.
