Both proteins, a6-integrin and Laminin-5, form a cell structure called hemidesmosome, that can be seen by transmission electron microscopy as electron-dense plaques. Serilesine at 0.005% has proved to increase the number of hemidesmosomes, thus increasing cohesion between dermis and epidermis.

If better cohesion between the dermis and epidermis is achieved, the skin appears younger, there is less sagging and the skin appears far more firm and compact.
