Vitamin C in cosmetics to protect the skin and help boost collagen

Apart from the fact that vitamin C is an anti-oxidant and therefore helps to prevent oxidative stress and premature aging, it is also required for the synthesis of collagen in the skin - collagen can be seen as the foundation of a healthy and young looking skin.

Cosmetic benefits of vitamin C collagen

It is a good antioxidant that helps to fight free-radical damage caused by cell metabolism and other outside factors, but has only recently become a popular ingredient in skincare and cosmetic products.

The connective tissue in the skin, collagen, is also heavily dependant on it, since in the absence of ascorbic acid, new collagen cannot be formed, as the fibroblast that produces the collagen, as well as elastin, needs it for synthesis.

When collagen and elastin are manufactured in good quantities, it results in a far younger looking skin. For this reason vitamin C is included in so many anti-aging products.

In fibroblast cultures, vitamin C also stimulates the production of collagen, by increasing the steady-state level of mRNA of collagen types I and collagen III through improved transcription and prolonged half-life of the transcripts. REF 1

Although it is a water-soluble vitamin, we obtain the vitamin C content of our products from rosehip, which is very high in vitamin C, but is bound in an oil medium.

This makes the vitamin C non-irritating to the skin, and helps prevent the Fenton reaction, which is a normal reaction that water-soluble ascorbic acid has when interacting with iron in the skin, causing a hydroxyl free radical to form.

The way in which we include it in our products is therefore a totally natural way, and it is easily absorbed and utilized by the skin.

Classification of vitamin C as a cosmetic ingredient collagen

Ascorbic acid is an organic compound and is classed as both a heterocyclic compound and a polyol. It is used as an antioxidant, pH adjuster, miscellaneous skin-conditioning agent and a fragrance ingredient. Its common name is vitamin C, although cosmetic labeling regulations forbid the use of the word "vitamin" on cosmetic products labels.
